Issey Miyake is Japanese fashion designer; he was born in Hiroshima, Japan on 22nd April 1938. His original name is Miyake Kazumaru and he is best known for combining Eastern and Western elements in his work.

He studied graphic design at the Tama Art University Tokyo and after graduation, he moved to Paris in 1965 where he enrolled at the renowned tailoring and dressmaking school Chamber Syndicate De La Haute Couture.

In 1970 he founded his own design studio named the Miyake Design Studio which was seen as an experimental to create innovative textiles which both East meets west.

He became an internationally recognized fashion designer by presenting his fresh boldly colored work during the Paris ready to wear collections. Issey Miyake was awarded in 2005 by Japan Art Association a Premium Imperial for outstanding achievements in the arts.

In 2006, he became the first fashion designer to receive the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for lifetime achievement, awarded by the Inamori Foundation in Japan.

The organization singled out as seminal the clothing line Miyake developed in 1993 called Pleats Please which allows unrestricted body movement while enabling the fabric to maintain its form and A Piece of Cloth in 1999.

A-POC was an ensemble piece made from a single thread with the aid of industrial knitting or weaving machine programmed by a computer. Issey Miyake is famous for his innovations with fabric and use of technology to produce interesting and practical garments.

His extensive knowledge of fabric led to an innovation in garment pleating that uses a heat process to add permanent pleats to garments that were already cut and sewn.

Other innovative fashion include A-POC which are tubes of fabric that can be cut into a variety of shapes and styles by the purchaser and the Issey Miyake line also known as a cauliflower outside Asian Market.
